Rossington’s own National Champion

Rossington Wheelers club member and former club junior Graham Briggs claimed the most prodigious win of his career so far by claiming the National Circuit/Criterium Championship on 29th July in Beverley. Briggs who was recently married to partner Sam only returned from honeymoon (riding around following the Tour De France) two days prior to the event and now has the privilege of wearing the National Champions jersey until next years event to cap of a memorable month for the 28 year old professional!
Criterium racing takes place around town and city centres and is a very fast and technical event – this event was one hour plus 5 laps of around 1 mile and Briggs led home the field of 80 riders that listed like a who’s who of domestic cycling to take the crown. This form of cycling is very popular with crowds and TV audiences, and both ITV4 and SKY have dedicated coverage of the Halfords Tour Series and National Circuit Series throughout the summer. Both of these events have been dominated by Briggs’ squad – the all conquering Rapha Condor Sharp outfit, which also boasts Bejing Gold Medal winner Ed Clancy MBE and Rotherham’s Dean Downing amongst its other riders. The squad are currently the Number 1 ranked squad and Briggs the Number 11 ranked rider in the country per British Cycling’s official rankings.
The hard work does not stop with this success and Briggs must now train to try and gain selection for the squad’s team to compete in the country’s premier stage race – The Tour of Britain which commences in September and features UCI World Tour teams including Team SKY and Mark Cavendish’s current team HTC Highroad.
One thing’s for sure Graham won’t be hard to pick out in the future races as now he’ll have the coveted jersey and gleaming new bike to match his smile, although these won’t be on show if he opts to defend his Rossington Cyclo X-mas (cyclo cross) title in December!
Another former Rossington Wheelers club junior also plying his trade on the pro circuit is Richard Lambert who is currently working as a mechanic with Team SKY Pro Cycling as well as no doubt getting in plenty of training on the road.

What it’s like to be a new member of Rossington Wheelers.
You always remember certain dates; your first day at work, your first date, the birth of your children. And so it is I remember 27th March 2011, my first ride out with The Rossington Wheelers.
Like many cyclist I starting riding to keep fit, riding on a mountain bike to The Doncaster Lakeside and back. In October 2010 I bought my first road bike as I felt this would supplement my leisure riding with my wife. I usually rode to Tickhill Spital, then Bawtry and back to Rossington, 12 miles in total, all left hand turns! I soon realised that I had the cycling bug and I knew that I could improve if I started riding with other cyclist.
Sunday 27th March 2011 was an overcast but warm morning. I met The Rossington Wheelers @ The Styrrup public house car park @ 9am. I arrived early in anticipation of completing an advertised bike ride of 60 miles; a distance I never thought was ever attainable! After a quick meet & greet, we were off! Obviously being a beginner, I stayed out of harm’s way @ the back, watching the various signals being given by the riders in front warning of upcoming obstructions in the road. As we cycled along, each Rossington Wheeler came back to ensure I was doing okay, encouraging me to ride in the pack to shelter me from the wind, to make my ride as easy as possible. As we progressed the time flew by, the route taking us through picturesque villages and rolling countryside. Riding in a group felt both brilliant and reassuring in equal measure, the sense that we were “in it together” and no one was going to get left behind, as well as having the experience in the club to fix any issues with the bike that might arise.
After 40 miles we arrived @ a cafe for a pit-stop, time to refuel and socialise. Speaking with my fellow riders it was great to hear about previous rides and the experiences gained over the years, the enthusiasm for riding being very evident. There is an excellent mix of riders in the club, all age groups and riding abilities, everyday cyclists who share a passion for cycling! I could already feel the sense of belonging, of having a better understanding road cycling and knowing that being in the club was going to be a rewarding experience.
When everyone was ready, we set off for home! Knowing we had already completed two thirds of the ride meant the return trip didn’t seem daunting at all. The pace was kept steady to allow the legs to get used to pedalling again after the cafe stop. After about 50 miles I still felt pretty fresh so decided to go to the front to lead the pack home. This was greeted with polite banter and I felt even more part of the club, doing my bit at the front to give other riders a rest behind me! Soon we saw road signs signalling we were almost home; Bawtry, Harworth, Rossington. As we entered the village, the sense of euphoria was tangible. I had done it! The ride was actually 69.28 miles, achieved in 4hours 27minutes. I couldn’t wait to get out cycling again the following Sunday!
Since my first ride I have completed several routes, attaining many firsts and personal bests. I have ridden 108 miles to the Humber Bridge, 120 miles to Cleethorpes and also competed in 10 miles time trials. I feel as fit @ 44 years old as I did when I was 24! For anyone who cycles, for sport or pleasure, I thoroughly recommend joining a cycling club. Having The Rossington Wheelers in the village is a huge bonus that shouldn’t be overlooked. Don’t take my word for it, check out it out for yourself on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/group.php?gid=133912479956531

Pooled Clubs 25 mile Time Trial:
Thank you to those who took part in the Pooled Club 25 mile Time Trial at Hatfield, and also to those who came along to give thier support. Oh I forgot to mention a certain person who decided on the way to the event that it was too difficult as it was going to rain and therefore didn’t start the event (nails). Maybe next year someone could organise an event when the weather is fine and sunny with a constant tail wind Ha! Ha!.
